Request AppointmentThe Importance of Your Oral Health
Oral health can impact your overall health, comfort, and confidence. An unhealthy amount of build up of plaque and tartar on your teeth can cause your gums to bleed, leading to inflammation, infection, and discomfort throughout the day, when you eat, or sleep.
An important part of your oral hygiene routine includes visiting your dentist for regular cleanings and exams. We can help treat oral issues that may arise and provide advice when it comes to building a good oral hygiene routine.
A good oral hygiene routine can help prevent tooth decay and inflammation. Tips to keep your mouth and body healthy include:
- Brushing your teeth for 2–3 minutes twice a day
- Floss at least once a day
- Remember to brush your tongue
- Drink water
- Eat balanced and nutritious meals

How often should I get a professional dental cleaning and checkup?
The Canadian Dental Association recommends that most adults and children receive a professional dental cleaning and checkup every six months. However, if you have a history of periodontal (gum) disease, a high rate of cavities, or underlying health conditions like diabetes,
Dr. Belman and Dr. Shah may recommend visiting our clinic every 3 to 4 months to maintain optimal oral health.
What is the difference between a regular dental cleaning and a deep cleaning (scaling)?
A regular dental cleaning removes soft plaque and hardened tartar from above the gum line, while a deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) removes bacteria and tartar from below the gum line.
Regular cleanings are preventative and typically performed every six months for patients with healthy gums. Deep cleanings are a specialized therapeutic treatment required when a patient has active gum disease or deep periodontal pockets that cannot be reached with standard brushing.
At what age should I bring my child in for their first dental appointment?
Your child should have their first dental appointment within six months of their first tooth erupting, or by their first birthday, whichever comes first.
This early “Chair Time” at Belman Dental Centre allows us to ensure that their jaws and teeth are developing correctly, gently check any new teeth, and provide parents with guidance on infant oral hygiene to help prevent future cavities.
