What happens during a cleaning and exam

Your appointment typically begins with a hygienist removing plaque and tartar, polishing teeth and discussing home care. X‑rays or intraoral scans may be taken only when clinically needed to support diagnosis.

The dentist will perform a thorough exam to assess tooth and gum health, review any X‑rays or scans, and discuss findings and next steps with you.

  • Inspect teeth and gums for wear and disease
  • Check for signs of tooth decay and gum disease
  • Assess bite, jaw function and any TMJ concerns
  • Oral cancer screening as part of the exam
  • Discuss preventive options such as fluoride or sealants

When to visit and what to expect

We generally recommend routine visits every six months, though your dentist may suggest a different schedule based on your oral health. There is no age too young or too old for preventive care—early visits help establish good habits and monitoring.

Before your visit, bring any relevant dental history and a list of questions. Belman Dental Centre is located at 1881 Yonge St., Suite 403, Toronto, Ontario M4S 3C4; paid parking is available on Yonge St., on Balliol and at nearby underground lots.

Personalized Care

Could This Be Right for You?

A conversation and clinical assessment are the best way to understand your options. People often ask about preventive dental care when they are experiencing one or more of the following situations.

  • It’s been longer than six months since your last professional cleaning or exam
  • You notice bleeding gums, persistent bad breath or new sensitivity
  • You’re planning dental work that benefits from a recent exam (crowns, implants or orthodontics)
  • A child or teen may benefit from sealants or a fluoride visit
  • You grind your teeth or participate in contact sports and need a guard

What to Expect

Your Care, Step by Step

1. Assessment

We begin with a focused history, oral exam and targeted imaging when needed (digital X‑rays or iTero scans) to understand your current oral health and risk factors.

2. Personalised plan

Based on the assessment, your dentist will explain recommended preventive steps—cleaning frequency, fluoride or sealants, periodontal care or guards—and discuss alternatives and timing.

3. Treatment

Our hygienist and dentist perform the agreed preventive care—professional cleaning, topical fluoride, sealants or periodontal therapy—and provide coaching for at‑home routines.

4. Follow‑up and ongoing care

We schedule recall visits and monitor changes. If specialised treatment is needed, your general dentist will discuss referral options and coordinate next steps.

Planning Your Care

Cost and payment

Fees for preventive visits depend on the type and extent of care recommended after an assessment. complete treatment and fee information is provided after your exam so you understand the proposed services and any follow‑up.

Our team can review how proposed care relates to your insurance or third‑party financing options and provide itemized fee information and resources to help you plan. Coverage and out‑of‑pocket amounts vary by individual policy and plan.

Good to Know

Preventive Dental Care FAQs

How often should I have a cleaning and exam?

We commonly recommend an exam and cleaning every six months, but the ideal interval depends on your individual risk for decay or gum disease. Your dentist will suggest a personalised recall schedule during your visit.

Are dental X‑rays safe?

We use digital X‑rays that require very low radiation and only take images when they will influence diagnosis or treatment. Your exposure is minimised and explained before images are taken; the iTero Element 3D scanner provides additional detail without radiation.

Will preventive treatment be painful?

Most preventive visits are comfortable. Professional cleanings may cause temporary sensitivity for some patients, especially if gums are inflamed. If you have anxiety or sensitivity, discuss options with our team—nitrous oxide and oral sedation are available when appropriate.

Does Belman Dental offer preventive care for children?

Yes. We provide exams, cleanings, fluoride and sealants for children and teens and work with families on daily care. If a child needs the expertise of a paediatric dental specialist, your general dentist will explain the reasons for referral and help arrange it.

What if my preventive exam finds a problem?

If we identify decay, gum disease or other concerns, the dentist will explain treatment options, timing and next steps. Most treatments are provided by your general dentist; when specialised care is in the patient’s best interest we will recommend and coordinate a referral.
